Little Saigon Yaletown

Cold weather eats were on the menu the other day, Vietnamese Pho to be exact. With an afternoon Downtown planned I wanted to take Melissa to a place neither of us had been to before and I thought Little Saigon in Yaletown would be a good choice. I’ve walked past and noticed the restaurant in the Summer and it was always busy so combined with a solid Urbanspoon rating they must be doing something right. We got there right around 12pm and the place was empty and after grabbing a table the place filled up within 15 minutes so we timed our visit just right.

I can’t visit a Vietnamese restaurant without ordering Spring Rolls ($7.75) and this day was no different. Little Saigon uses a wheat wrapper and I prefer the rice paper wrapper for its crunchy exterior. The real star of a good spring roll is the filling and Little Saigon’s was certainly tasty, they took care with the seasoning and it was moist. One negative thing I have to say is these were darn expensive, almost double the price of any other Vietnamese restaurant.

I went with the Toms Special ($14.95) which had a mix of rare beef, brisket and beef meatballs. Brought to the table in an extra-large white bowl that had to a half-size bigger than Melissa’s bowl of soup. All of the meat was really good quality, the rare beef melted in my mouth, the brisket had a good amount of fat marbled in it and the meatball was seasoned nicely and was still tender. The broth had no MSG in it as stated on the menu but I think it needed a bit because the broth had no depth of flavor at all and was just alright. The portion size on this bowl of soup was definitely on the large size and I can usually finish my soup easily but not in this case.

Melissa went with the Beef Ball Pho ($9.99), nothing much different to say than my soup-great meatballs and just alright broth.

So with killer spring rolls and quality soup ingredients Little Saigon is actually good for the diverse Yaletown neighborhood, the menu is approachable to people new to Vietnamese cuisine or if you need a pho fix and are in the area but there are better Vietnamese options elsewhere for a lower price.
